Specific problems

L’Istituto Comprensivo Luigi Valli, è un complesso di tre edifici adiacenti tra loro. Gli edifici ospitano le seguenti scuole: Scuola Media Luigi Valli, Scuola Elementare Sandro Pertini e Scuola Materna Rodari.

The Luigi Valli School Institute complex consists of three buildings that are situated next to one another. The buildings house the following schools: Scuola Media Luigi Valli [High School], Scuola Elementare Sandro Pertini [Primary School] and Scuola Materna Rodari [Infant School].

Three separate Central Heating Units supply the three buildings.

The main problems identified included:

  • outdated heat generator: in particular, the apparatus dated back to the early 90s and gave a fairly low output which worsened the average seasonal performance of the building;
  • the distribution of the circuits and, in particular, the lack of control devices for each individual area made heat distribution and control of the various areas considerably inefficient;
  • the electric ventilation pumps on the individual circuits did not comply completely with the new ErP directive, according to which the use of electronic controls on each electric motor is mandatory, or in any event the pumps must comply with the directive.

The following interventions were carried out in compliance with the Ministerial Decree of 12.04.1996 on fire prevention, with the Ministerial Decree 01.12.1975 INAIL (formerly ISPESL) and the Presidential Decree 412/96 and subsequent amendments and supplements. The above mentioned interventions were the result of the interventions performed on the technological regeneration aspect, such as the centralisation of the heating system, for which a single central heating unit was built serving the school complex, a pumping sub-station was built in the former central heating units, a co-generator was installed and a district heating line was created to transport the thermal carrier fluid to the pumping substation.

The existing heat generators were replaced with an YGNIS Varino condensation heat generator with a power of 511 kW. The new top-of-the-range generator guarantees excellent efficiency and limited maintenance, apart from the regular maintenance required by the manufacturer.

A TEDOM Micro T25 co-generator was installed, with a thermal potentiality of 47 kW and an electrical potentiality of 25 kW. The school buildings use the electric energy produced by the “heat tracing” co-generator to supply the electrical system in the buildings, whereas the heat produced by the motor is recovered and sent to the heating system to supplement the heat produced by the heat generator. The district heating system, that transports the thermal carrier fluid, connects the central heating unit and the relevant sub-stations.

Results

Regeneration of the system by replacing the boiler gave the following advantages:

  • Functional benefits;
  • energy-saving benefits;
  • technical-economic benefits;
  • ecological benefits;

This translates into

  • Increased system efficiency and reliability;
  • Reduced maintenance costs;

The new generator enables optimum use, thanks also to a complete, flexible burner,

with an oxygen probe for flame control, with a subsequent reduction in the maintenance required.

The energy benefits obtained are due to the reduction in thermal energy and electricity consumption. The achievable figures show 1 TOE/year, 80,000 kWh, which corresponds to a reduction in primary energy of 15%/year.
